Join the Flagstaff Observatory & Education Center as an Astronomy Outreach Specialist. This full-time role blends science communication, education program development, and community engagement to bring the wonders of the universe to learners of all ages.
You will collaborate with research scientists, educators, and volunteers to design engaging experiences that inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.
Responsibility
- Plan, coordinate, and deliver in-person and virtual astronomy outreach events (planetarium shows, telescope nights, workshops) for diverse audiences.
- Develop, update, and maintain educational content, curricula, demonstrations, and outreach materials.
- Manage outreach calendar, partnerships with schools, community groups, and museums.
- Lead volunteer programs, recruit training, and supervise student interns and volunteers.
- Collaborate with researchers to translate complex discoveries into accessible public presentations.
- Coordinate grant writing and fundraising activities to support outreach initiatives.
- Evaluate program impact through surveys, attendance data, and qualitative feedback; report findings to leadership.
Qualification
- Bachelor's degree in Astronomy, Physics, Education, or a closely related field; master's preferred.
- 2+ years in astronomy outreach, science communication, or education programming.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; engaging public speaker with ability to simplify complex concepts.
- Experience with planetarium software (e.g., Uniview, Digistar) and telescope observing programs; basic tech troubleshooting skills.
- Strong project management and event planning abilities; ability to manage multiple programs and deadlines.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed; valid driver's license and willingness to travel within the region.
- Commitment to inclusivity and ability to work with diverse audiences, including students, families, and underrepresented groups.
