Job description

Heritage Nexus is a premier archival and digital preservation organization dedicated to safeguarding cultural and historical assets for future generations. We are seeking a results‑driven Senior Archivist to lead archival programs, digital preservation, and metadata management for our high‑profile collections in Boston.

In this role, you will collaborate with IT, curators, and researchers to ensure our holdings are accurately described, securely preserved, and readily accessible. You will shape policies, drive modernization efforts, and mentor a dedicated team of archivists and technicians.

Responsibility

  • Lead archival programs for born‑digital and physical collections, ensuring long‑term preservation and accessibility.
  • Oversee digitization workflows including scanning, OCR, quality assurance, and metadata capture.
  • Define and implement metadata standards (Dublin Core, METS, PREMIS) and ensure consistent application across platforms.
  • Manage accessioning, preservation actions, and access policies in alignment with organizational guidelines.
  • Collaborate with IT, librarians, curators, and external partners to support research and public access.
  • Provide reference services and guidance to researchers, staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Develop budgets, project plans, and performance metrics for archival initiatives.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to policy development and departmental strategy.

Qualification

  • Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of archival experience with emphasis on digital preservation and metadata management.
  • Strong knowledge of archival standards and metadata schemas (Dublin Core, METS, PREMIS, etc.).
  • Proficiency with archival management systems and digitization workflows.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; proven ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Experience developing policies for access, retention, and deaccessioning; project management experience a plus.
  • Track record of managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and handling sensitive information securely.
