Boston Heritage Institute is seeking a Senior Historian and Curator to lead rigorous historical research, develop compelling exhibits, and expand public programs. This full-time role blends scholarship with accessible storytelling to bring the past to life for diverse audiences.
As a core member of the curatorial team, you will work with primary sources, manage archival materials, and collaborate with educators and designers to create engaging interpretations and experiences.
Responsibility
- Conduct original historical research using primary and secondary sources to support exhibits and programs.
- Lead the interpretation and curation of exhibits, including object selection, labeling, and wall texts.
- Collaborate with education, outreach, and collections staff to design accessible public programs.
- Develop archival workflows, metadata, and digital collections for online access.
- Plan and deliver lectures, tours, and other programs for diverse audiences.
- Write grant proposals and contribute to fundraising efforts to support research and exhibitions.
- Mentor interns and junior staff, guiding research methods and storytelling techniques.
- Ensure adherence to professional standards, ethics, and accessibility guidelines across projects.
Qualification
- Master's degree or PhD in History, Public History, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in museums, archives, or historical research with exhibit development.
- Strong research skills with proficiency in primary sources, archival cataloging, and historiography.
- Ability to translate complex topics into engaging, accessible interpretive materials.
- Experience with exhibit design, labeling, and interpretive writing for diverse audiences.
- Familiarity with digital collections platforms and metadata standards.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and collaborative project management abilities.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in public history programming.
