NovaLex Solutions is a leading technology focused intellectual property firm seeking a Senior IP Counsel to guide clients through complex patent programs and strategic IP initiatives. This role blends technical thinking, legal acumen, and business impact to protect innovative products in fast moving markets. Based in San Jose, CA, the Senior IP Counsel will lead patent strategy, licensing, and IP risk management for a diverse portfolio spanning software, hardware, semiconductors, and related technologies. You will work closely with R&D, product, and business leaders to translate invention disclosures into robust protection and commercial value. The role requires collaboration with external counsel when needed, managing global filing programs, and helping shape the IP strategy to sustain competitive advantage.

Responsibility

  • Lead patent portfolio strategy and prosecution for multiple high impact technology programs.
  • Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications worldwide; supervise patent analytics and freedom to operate assessments.
  • Draft and negotiate IP licenses, collaboration agreements, and cross license arrangements with strategic partners.
  • Advise R&D and product teams on patentability, validity, and potential design arounds; minimize IP risk in product roadmaps.
  • Coordinate IP due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, investments, and strategic partnerships.
  • Manage relationships with external IP counsel and oversee budget and billing efficiency.
  • Develop and deliver internal IP training, policies, and best practices to foster a culture of robust IP protection.
  • Oversee trademark and branding strategy as needed and ensure alignment with global IP strategy.

Qualification

  • Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and active license to practice in California.
  • 7+ years of intellectual property experience with a focus on patents in technology sectors.
  • Strong background in patent prosecution, patent landscape analysis, and freedom to operate assessments.
  • Experience with licensing, technology transfer, and complex contract negotiations.
  • Engineering degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Excellent drafting, communication, negotiation, and strategic thinking with ability to influence at senior levels.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in fast paced environments and supervise junior team members.
