Job description
Join AquaNova Research Institute as a Senior Oceanography Scientist to lead multidisciplinary field campaigns and advanced data analytics in coastal and open-ocean environments. This role blends field leadership, data-driven research, and collaboration with government and industry partners to inform policy and conservation.
We value rigorous science, innovation, and clear communication of complex findings to diverse audiences. You will mentor junior researchers, publish high-impact results, and contribute to strategic research initiatives addressing climate variability, coastal resilience, and marine ecosystems.
Responsibility
- Lead and design field campaigns and data collection in coastal and open-ocean environments, coordinating with vessels, ship crews, and laboratory teams.
- Oversee data management and quality control for large oceanographic datasets (CTD, ARGO, ADCP, moorings, gliders).
- Develop and apply numerical models and statistical analyses to understand ocean circulation, biogeochemistry, and ecosystem dynamics.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (physics, biology, data science) to translate findings into actionable insights for policy and management.
- Prepare and publish peer-reviewed papers, conference presentations, and technical reports; contribute to grant proposals.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, personnel, and stakeholder communications; supervise graduate students and technicians.
- Communicate science effectively to non-technical audiences including policymakers, partner institutions, and the public.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, Marine Science, or a closely related field; or an MSc with substantial field and analytic experience.
- 3+ years of hands-on field data collection and analysis with oceanographic instruments; proficiency in MATLAB and Python (or similar languages).
- Strong hands-on experience with CTD, ADCP, ARGO floats, gliders, telemetry, and mooring systems.
- Experience with ocean modeling, data assimilation, and statistical methods; ability to develop and test hypotheses using large datasets.
- Excellent scientific writing and presentation skills; track record of publications and grant writing is desirable.
- Proven project management and leadership abilities; experience supervising students or junior staff.
- Willingness to travel for field campaigns and collaborate with international partners; ability to work in challenging environments and adapt to field conditions.
