Job description

NovaGrid Energy is seeking a seasoned Electrical Power Systems Engineer to join our Houston team. You will design and optimize power systems for utility-scale projects, renewable integration, and microgrid solutions. This role combines hands-on engineering with cross-functional collaboration to deliver reliable, code-compliant solutions.

Responsibility

  • Lead electrical power system design for grid-connected and off-grid projects, including substations, protection schemes, and distribution networks.
  • Perform load flow, short-circuit, and dynamic studies using PSS/E, ETAP, or DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Develop and review protection coordination, relay settings, and SCADA HMI integration.
  • Coordinate with civil, mechanical, and software teams to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Prepare technical specifications, drawings, and bill of materials; support procurement and commissioning.
  • Provide field support during commissioning and startup, diagnosing faults and optimizing performance.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE standards, and local regulations; contribute to HSE and quality programs.

Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field; Master’s preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in power systems engineering, substations, or renewable integration.
  • Proficiency with power system analysis tools (PSS/E, ETAP, DIgSILENT, MATLAB/Simulink).
  • Strong understanding of protection schemes, relay coordination, and switchgear selection.
  • Experience with renewable energy integration (solar, wind, storage) and microgrid concepts.
  • Solid knowledge of NEC, IEEE standards, and utility interconnection requirements.
  • Excellent communication, project management, and collaborative skills; ability to work with diverse teams.
  • Professional engineering license (PE) or eligibility is a plus.
