NovaFrame Studio is seeking a seasoned Lead Character Animator to shape compelling characters for our next slate of animated features and commercials. Based in Los Angeles, this role collaborates closely with directors, designers, and riggers to deliver high-quality animation on demanding timelines. The ideal candidate balances artistic mastery with mentorship, guiding a team of junior animators through all stages from concept to final polish.
In this role you will champion character performance, establish timing and acting standards, and ensure consistency across shots. You will also help refine our animation pipeline and contribute to creative sessions with cross-disciplinary teams.
Responsibility
- Lead the character animation pipeline from blocking to final polish, ensuring expressive performances.
- Collaborate with directors to translate storyboards into dynamic, believable characters and rhythm.
- Mentor and critique work from junior animators; provide actionable feedback and training.
- Deliver high-quality animation using Maya and/or Toon Boom Harmony; supervise lip-sync and facial animation.
- Oversee rigging and deformation compatibility; coordinate with riggers on asset readiness.
- Maintain schedule, manage revisions, and communicate risks to the production team.
- Contribute to the creative process by sharing references, study materials, and best practices.
Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Film, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).
- 8+ years of professional animation experience with a strong showreel or portfolio.
- Expert proficiency in Maya and/or Toon Boom Harmony; solid understanding of rigs and facial animation.
- Strong storytelling, acting, timing, and gesture skills with a keen eye for detail.
- Experience leading or mentoring a team; excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to evolving project goals.
- Portfolio demonstrating range across 2D and 3D animation, turnarounds, and shot-to-shot performance.
