PrairieHorizon Livestock Group is seeking a hands-on Livestock Farm Manager who can oversee day-to-day operations with a focus on animal welfare, biosecurity, and sustainable production. This full-time role combines leadership, hands-on farming, and data-driven decision making in a modern pasture and barn system in the Des Moines region.
As a key member of our operations, you will manage cattle and/or sheep herds, monitor feed, health, and breeding, coordinate with veterinarians, and ensure compliance with animal welfare standards. Responsibility
- Oversee daily farm operations for cattle and/or sheep, including feeding, breeding, and calving/lambing cycles.
- Develop and implement feeding plans and rations aligned with animal health and production goals.
- Lead a small team of farm workers, scheduling shifts, training, and performance feedback.
- Monitor animal welfare, biosecurity protocols, and environmental sustainability measures.
- Coordinate with veterinarians, nutritionists, and suppliers to ensure timely care and supply chain efficiency.
- Maintain accurate records using our farm management software for breeding, health, and production metrics.
- Evaluate operational processes to improve efficiency and reduce waste while maintaining high welfare standards.
- Ensure strict compliance with safety, labor, and animal welfare regulations and company policies.
Qualification
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant field (agriculture, animal science) preferred; extensive hands-on livestock experience acceptable.
- Minimum 5 years of livestock farming experience.
- Proven leadership and team management skills; ability to train and motivate staff.
- Strong knowledge of animal nutrition, welfare standards, and biosecurity best practices.
- Experience with farm management software and basic data analysis; comfort with technology.
- Excellent record-keeping, organization, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including seasonal peaks; valid driver's license required.
