Job description
Verdant Pastures Farms is seeking a skilled Livestock Farm Manager to oversee daily operations of our mixed cattle and poultry operation in Ames, IA. You will lead grazing and feeding programs, health and welfare protocols, labor, and safety compliance to ensure sustainable production and animal wellbeing.
In this role, you will work closely with veterinarians, nutritionists, and the farm owner to implement best practices in breeding, housing, biosecurity, and record keeping. We offer a competitive compensation package and opportunities for leadership in a growing farm operation.
Responsibility
- Oversee daily cattle and poultry operations, including feeding, watering, grazing management, and housing.
- Develop and implement comprehensive animal health and welfare plans in collaboration with veterinarians and nutritionists.
- Manage farm staff, scheduling, training, safety programs, and performance feedback.
- Monitor inventory, feed usage, equipment maintenance, and record-keeping to optimize resource use.
- Ensure biosecurity, compliance with regulatory requirements, and accurate health records.
- Coordinate breeding programs, calving, hatchery cycles, and production planning.
- Prepare budgets, track expenses, and contribute to long-term farm expansion and sustainability goals.
Qualification
- 3+ years of hands-on livestock farming or farm management experience, with cattle and poultry knowledge
- Strong understanding of animal nutrition, welfare, and housing practices
- Experience with herd-health programs and coordinating with veterinary teams
- Leadership skills to manage, train, and develop a small farm team
- Proficient record-keeping and basic data analysis; familiarity with farm management software or spreadsheets
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate common farm equipment
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including some weekends and on-call rotations
