Job description
Join the Celestial Research Institute, a premier astronomy research organization, to design and implement data-driven solutions that advance our understanding of the universe. This full-time role blends telescope data analysis, statistical modeling, and scalable data pipelines to turn terabytes of cosmic data into actionable insights.
You will collaborate with astronomers, software engineers, and observatory staff to extract meaningful findings from raw image and time-series data, develop predictive models of celestial phenomena, and contribute to high-impact publications and open-source software.
Responsibility
- Lead end-to-end data analysis of astronomical datasets from ground-based and space telescopes.
- Design, implement, and maintain scalable data pipelines for ingestion, cleansing, and storage of large image and time-series data.
- Develop statistical and machine learning models to detect transient events, exoplanet signals, and other celestial phenomena.
- Collaborate with scientists to define experiments, validate results, and translate findings into actionable insights.
- Prototype visualization tools and dashboards to communicate results to researchers and stakeholders.
- Contribute to open-source software, publish methodologies, and present results at conferences.
- Mentor junior team members, foster best practices in code quality, testing, and version control.
Qualification
- Master's or PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Data Science, or a related field.
- Strong programming experience in Python (NumPy, SciPy, Astropy) and SQL; familiarity with data processing frameworks is a plus.
- Experience with machine learning frameworks (scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch) and proficiency in time-series and image analysis.
- Hands-on experience with cloud computing (AWS preferred) and building data pipelines (ETL, data lake, workflow orchestration).
- Familiarity with astronomical data formats (FITS) and data standards; ability to work with large, complex datasets.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills; ability to explain complex concepts to diverse audiences.
- Strong publication record or demonstrable project portfolio in astronomy/astrophysics is a plus.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, cross-disciplinary research environment.
