Job description
BlueWave Oceanographic Institute is seeking a Senior Oceanographer to advance research in coastal and open-ocean processes. This role combines fieldwork, data science, and ocean modeling to inform policy and scientific understanding. We value interdisciplinary collaboration, open science, and data-driven decision making. You will work with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and educators to implement cutting-edge observational campaigns and integrate multi-sensor data.
Responsibility
- Lead designing and executing oceanographic data collection campaigns (CTD, ADCP, gliders, autonomous platforms) in coastal and shelf regions.
- Develop and maintain numerical models to simulate physical oceanography processes and predict coastal hazards.
- Process and quality-control large, heterogeneous datasets; produce reproducible analyses and documentation.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to translate findings into actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders.
- Mentor junior scientists, manage project milestones, and contribute to grant writing and reporting.
- Present findings at scientific conferences and publish peer-reviewed papers.
- Lead field operations planning, safety oversight, and compliance with research ethics and data management standards.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography, Marine Science, or a closely related field; 5+ years of relevant post‑graduate experience.
- Strong background in physical oceanography, data assimilation, and modeling (e.g., ROMS, MITgcm) with hands-on programming (Python, MATLAB, R).
- Extensive field experience with CTD, ADCP, gliders, and moorings; ability to lead field campaigns.
- Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications and grant writing; strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with data management, reproducible workflows, and version control (Git).
- Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and communicate complex results to non-specialists.
- U.S. work authorization or eligibility to work in the United States.
