The position offers mentorship from senior archaeologists, opportunities to contribute to publishable research, and exposure to a range of field techniques and conservation workflows.

Responsibility

  • Support excavation fieldwork including digging, recording stratigraphy, mapping contexts, and operating basic surveying equipment
  • Assist with site planning, shovel test pits, backfilling, and sample handling while adhering to safety protocols
  • Recover, document, and care for artifacts; maintain chain of custody and proper labeling
  • Record field notes, take site photographs, and manage digital data in spreadsheets and databases
  • Participate in laboratory processing, conservation prep, and material analysis under supervision
  • Enter data into GIS and artifact databases; assist with basic spatial analysis
  • Uphold safety, ethical guidelines, and cultural sensitivity on all sites
  • Support public outreach activities and site tours as needed

Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field or current enrollment in a relevant program
  • 1 or more field seasons with hands-on excavation experience preferred
  • Familiarity with stratigraphy, artifact handling, recording practices, and basic lab routines
  • Proficiency with data entry and basic GIS concepts; experience with ArcGIS is a plus
  • Strong physical stamina for outdoor fieldwork and ability to lift moderate loads
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and adapt to changing conditions on-site
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to field sites as needed
