HeritageQuest Archaeology is seeking a motivated Archaeology Field Technician to join our Charleston, SC team. This position supports cultural resource management projects across the Southeastern United States, focusing on field surveys, excavation support, artifact handling, and data documentation. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong safety awareness, ethical practice, and excellent teamwork.
Responsibilities include hands-on fieldwork, recording stratigraphic observations, coordinating with project supervisors, and assisting with lab processing and artifact cataloging. You will gain exposure to GIS mapping, GPS data collection, artifact conservation, and written reporting in a professional CRM environment.
Responsibility
- Conduct field surveys and excavations under supervision on CRM projects in coastal environments.
- Document field methods with accurate notes, forms, sketches, and daily field logs.
- Collect, catalog, and bag artifacts; photograph specimens and maintain chain-of-custody records.
- Maintain field equipment, safety protocols, and site logistics to support efficient operations.
- Assist with GIS mapping, GPS data collection, and data entry into project databases.
- Coordinate with project managers and SHPO representatives to ensure compliance with standards.
- Prepare field reports, time sheets, and maintenance logs; support lab processing as needed.
- Communicate findings with team members and contribute to post-field analysis and preservation planning.
Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field; field school experience welcomed.
- Minimum 1 year of field archaeology experience in CRM or academic projects.
- Knowledge of excavation techniques, stratigraphy, provenience, and artifact handling.
- Proficiency with GIS, GPS data collection, or basic data management is a plus.
- Ability to perform physically demanding fieldwork in diverse weather and terrain.
- Strong written and verbal communication; reliable team player with good organization and attention to detail.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for field assignments; willingness to work weekends or early mornings as needed.
- Safety training such as OSHA 10 or equivalent is preferred or willing to obtain.
