Join Sierra Heritage Archaeology, LLC, a premier archaeology firm stewarding cultural heritage in the American Southwest. We are seeking a motivated Archaeology Field Technician to support seasonal and ongoing field projects in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico.
As a Field Technician, you will assist senior archaeologists with survey, excavation, artifact collection, and site documentation, following professional standards and regulatory guidelines. Responsibility
- Conduct shovel test pits, trenches, and survey transects according to project plans and methodological standards.
- Document site features, stratigraphy, and artifact distributions using standardized forms and photography.
- Assist with artifact handling, bagging, labeling, and temporary curation on site.
- Collect, catalog, and prepare samples for lab analysis (soil, botanical remains) per QA/QC protocols.
- Record field notes, GPS data, and photographic logs; upload data to project databases promptly.
- Support health and safety, weather readiness, and equipment maintenance and calibration.
- Collaborate with team to ensure compliance with SHPO/NPS guidelines and permit stipulations.
- Contribute to post-fieldwork tasks including preliminary artifact sorting and site reports.
Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field (or current progress toward degree) with field experience preferred; equivalent field experience considered.
- Prior field archaeology experience or internship; familiarity with survey methods, recording protocols, and excavation techniques.
- Familiarity with GIS and data collection tools (GPS, total stations); proficiency with ArcGIS or QGIS is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail, physical stamina, and ability to work in varying weather and rugged terrain.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow project protocols.
- Knowledge of artifact handling, curation practices, and ethical considerations; awareness of cultural resources laws and guidelines.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to field sites; willingness to work long hours and weekends as needed.
- Safety-conscious with experience using PPE and field safety protocols.
