Job description
Join Lumen Observatory, a premier astronomical research facility, to advance our understanding of the universe through data-driven discovery. This full-time role focuses on turning complex telescope and survey data into actionable insights, enabling scientists to test theories and publish impactful results.
As an Astronomy Data Scientist, you will collaborate with astronomers, software engineers, and educators to build robust data pipelines, implement analyses, and communicate findings to both scientific and public audiences.
Responsibility
- Develop and maintain data processing pipelines for large astronomical datasets (images, spectra, time-domain data).
- Apply statistical methods and machine learning to extract signals from noisy observations.
- Collaborate with instrument teams to calibrate data and validate results.
- Create reproducible analysis workflows using Python, Jupyter, and version control.
- Visualize results for scientific reporting and public outreach.
- Document methods and contribute to open-source astronomy software.
Qualification
- Master's degree in Astronomy, Physics, Data Science, or related field; PhD preferred.
- 3+ years of experience in astronomical data analysis or a closely related domain.
- Strong Python skills (NumPy/SciPy, Astropy) and experience with SQL.
- Experience with data visualization (Matplotlib/Seaborn) and Jupyter notebooks.
- Familiarity with telescope data formats (FITS) and data pipelines; knowledge of machine learning is a plus.
- Excellent communication and ability to work collaboratively across teams.
- Proficiency with Linux, Git, and HPC environments.
