Job description
Join Global Ocean Institute as an Oceanography Research Scientist to advance cutting-edge research in ocean dynamics, climate variability, and marine ecosystem processes. This role combines field campaigns, data science, and collaborative model development to drive actionable insights for policymakers, industry, and conservation groups. Regular on-site presence in Woods Hole is expected, with occasional field deployments.
We seek a collaborative, detail-oriented scientist who thrives in multidisciplinary teams and is passionate about understanding the ocean system and communicating results to diverse audiences.
What you’ll do: lead innovative research, design experiments, oversee data acquisition and quality control, develop computational tools, and contribute to high-impact publications. You’ll have access to world-class facilities and a vibrant marine science community.
Responsibility
- Lead and coordinate oceanographic data collection campaigns (CTD, ADCP, acoustics) and supervise field teams.
- Develop robust data processing pipelines using Python, MATLAB, or R; manage large, multi-source datasets.
- Create and test numerical and statistical models to analyze circulation, mixing, and coastal processes.
- Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national and international conferences.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams (biology, geoscience, policy) to translate results into actionable insights.
- Oversee project planning, milestones, budgeting, and reporting to funding agencies; mentor students and technicians.
- Improve data management, instrument calibration, quality control, and safety protocols for field operations.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography, Marine Physics, or a closely related field; or MS with 5+ years of relevant experience.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with oceanographic data collection, processing, and analysis.
- Proficiency in Python and MATLAB; experience with R and GIS is a plus.
- Strong record of peer-reviewed publications and ability to communicate complex results clearly.
- Experience with CTD, ADCP, ARGO, and autonomous platforms; field deployment experience preferred.
- Excellent collaboration, project management, and written/spoken communication skills.
- Willingness to travel for field campaigns and institutional collaborations; U.S. work authorization.
