Job description
Join our premier coastal oceanography team in San Diego. This role focuses on advancing understanding of coastal circulation, nutrient transport, and marine ecosystem dynamics through high-quality observations, data analysis, and modeling.
In this position, you will lead field campaigns, supervise instrument deployments, and collaborate with scientists, engineers, and policymakers to translate findings into evidence-based recommendations for coastal management and climate resilience.
Responsibility
- Lead design and execution of coastal oceanography field campaigns, instrument deployments (CTD, ADCP, sensors), and data collection.
- Develop and apply numerical models (ROMS, MITgcm) to simulate coastal circulation, sediment transport, and biogeochemical processes.
- Analyze multi-sensor datasets to derive physical, chemical, and biological parameters; ensure data quality and reproducibility.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to interpret results and inform management decisions for ports, harbors, and protected areas.
- Create reproducible workflows using Python, MATLAB, R, and SQL; maintain documentation, version control, and data stewardship.
- Communicate findings through dashboards, technical reports, peer-reviewed publications, and stakeholder briefings.
- Mentor junior staff and students; contribute to grant development and project planning.
Qualification
- MS or PhD in Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, Marine Science, or a closely related field.
- 5+ years of experience in coastal ocean observations, data processing, and interpretation.
- Strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, and R; experience with data visualization and statistics.
- Hands-on experience with ocean observing systems (CTD, ADCP, ARGO) and GIS spatial analysis.
- Proficiency with numerical modeling (ROMS, MITgcm) and data management best practices.
- Proven ability to work in cross-disciplinary teams; excellent written and oral communication skills; track record of scientific publications.
- Field campaign planning, instrument calibration, safety training, and project management experience.
