Job description
Celestial Analytics Lab is seeking an Astronomy Data Scientist to turn complex telescope data into actionable insights. You will collaborate with astronomers, software engineers, and fellow data scientists to design robust data pipelines, run analyses, and contribute to high-impact scientific publications.
In this role you will work with real observational data from cutting-edge facilities, develop scalable processing workflows in Python, and help translate discoveries into accessible results for researchers and policymakers. We offer a competitive compensation package, professional development, and access to leading computing resources.
Responsibility
- Collaborate with astronomers to design and implement data pipelines for telescope and survey data.
- Develop and optimize data processing workflows using Python (NumPy, SciPy, AstroPy) and SQL.
- Apply machine learning and statistical methods to classify objects, detect anomalies, and quantify uncertainties.
- Ensure data quality, provenance, and metadata management across large, distributed datasets.
- Build and maintain visualization dashboards and reports for scientific teams and stakeholders.
- Plan and execute experiments, document methodologies, and contribute to publications and open-source tools.
- Collaborate across software, hardware, and research teams to deliver end-to-end analytics solutions.
Qualification
- Master’s degree in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Computer Science, or related field (PhD preferred).
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with data-intensive astronomy projects or simulations.
- Proficiency in Python (NumPy, SciPy, AstroPy) and SQL; experience with cloud platforms is a plus.
- Experience with astronomical data formats (FITS, VO) and data visualization tools.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills; ability to explain complex results to non-experts.
- Familiarity with HPC environments or distributed computing; version control (Git) required.
- Track record of publications or a robust project portfolio is highly desirable.
