Join the Lumen Star Institute as our Astronomy Outreach Lead. You will shape and lead compelling science programs, manage community events, and translate complex astronomical concepts into accessible experiences for diverse audiences. Based in Flagstaff, you will collaborate with astronomers, educators, and data scientists to expand public understanding of the universe.
This role blends science communication with program management, donor relations, and hands-on education. You will lead planetarium talks, school workshops, telescope nights, and virtual events that spark curiosity in students and adults alike.
Responsibility
- Develop and execute engaging astronomy education programs for schools, museums, and public events.
- Plan and deliver planetarium shows, telescope nights, and hands-on demonstrations for audiences of all ages.
- Collaborate with scientists to translate research findings into accessible, accurate narratives.
- Manage outreach partnerships with local schools, science centers, and community organizations.
- Create compelling outreach materials including visuals, demos, and digital content.
- Track program impact, attendance, and feedback to continuously improve offerings.
- Oversee volunteer and intern programs to expand capacity.
- Represent the institute in public forums, media, and STEM advocacy efforts.
Qualification
- Bachelor's degree in astronomy, physics, education, communications, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
- Proven experience in science outreach, education programming, or public communication.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to tailor messages to diverse audiences.
- Experience with visual storytelling and data visualization; proficiency with presentation tools.
- Strong project management and event planning skills; ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously.
- Familiarity with social media strategy and digital content creation.
- Ability to travel locally for events and occasional weekends/evenings as needed.
- Passion for astronomy and public science education, with strong interpersonal skills.
