Join the Celestial Institute for Space Science as an Astronomy Data Scientist & Outreach Specialist. This role blends advanced data analysis with public engagement to accelerate discoveries and inspire the next generation of explorers.
You will work with astronomers, engineers, and educators to convert complex telescope data into actionable insights and compelling narratives.
Responsibility
- Develop and maintain data pipelines for astronomical observations from ground-based and space-based facilities.
- Analyze large datasets (images, spectra) using Python, SQL, and statistical methods.
- Build predictive models and interactive dashboards to support research and outreach.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and educators on projects and grant proposals.
- Ensure reproducible analyses through version control, documentation, and notebooks.
- Design and lead public outreach initiatives, citizen science projects, and school programs.
- Assist with data archiving, metadata standards, and telescope scheduling integrations.
Qualification
- Master's degree in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Computer Science, or a related field; PhD preferred or equivalent experience.
- Strong Python experience with numpy, pandas, SciPy, and astropy; SQL proficiency.
- Experience handling astronomical data formats (FITS, VO standards) and image processing.
- Proficiency with data visualization tools (Matplotlib, Plotly, Bokeh) and dashboarding.
- Familiarity with Linux/Unix environments and HPC workflows.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across disciplines.
- Proven track record of research productivity and documentation.
