Job description

Join the National Healthcare Group (NHG) as a Bioinformatician and contribute to critical pathogen surveillance and outbreak response initiatives. You will work at the intersection of biology, data science and clinical science to transform complex genomic data into actionable insights that support patient care and public health programs.

As a member of our bioinformatics team, you will design and implement scalable pipelines for processing whole-genome sequencing data, integrate datasets from laboratories, hospitals and public health partners, and translate findings into reports, dashboards and interactive visualizations used by clinicians, researchers and policymakers. You will collaborate with clinical microbiology, epidemiology, biostatistics, and data science teams to identify trends, track emerging variants, and support surveillance, research and quality improvement initiatives.

We are committed to rigorous, reproducible research and open collaboration. You will apply best practices in data management, software development, and reproducible workflows, contributing to healthcare outcomes in Singapore and beyond. This role offers opportunities for professional growth, cross-disciplinary projects, and ongoing training in the latest bioinformatics tools and methods.

Ideal candidates bring curiosity, strong communication skills, and a results-driven mindset. If you are passionate about translating genomic data into meaningful clinical and public health impact, we want to hear from you.

Responsibility

  • Design, implement and optimize end-to-end bioinformatics pipelines for processing bacterial and viral genome data, including QC, alignment, variant calling and annotation.
  • Analyze high-throughput sequencing datasets to support diagnostic evaluation, outbreak investigations and surveillance activities.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, microbiologists and epidemiologists to interpret genomic findings and communicate results effectively to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Develop data visualization dashboards and automated reports to track pathogen trends and public health indicators.
  • Ensure data provenance, version control, and reproducibility of workflows using best practices in software development.
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to grant proposals and research collaborations.

Qualification

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, or a related field.
  • Experience analyzing next-generation sequencing data (WGS, targeted sequencing) and interpreting genomic results.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R, with experience in bioinformatics tools (Bioconductor, BWA/Bowtie, SAMtools, GATK, etc.).
  • Experience with Linux/Unix environments, scripting, and version control (Git).
  • Familiarity with cloud computing (AWS, Azure) and HPC environments; ability to manage large datasets securely in compliance with healthcare data policies.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex genetic concepts to clinical and non-technical audiences.
  • Relevant publications or demonstrated research impact is a plus.
