Job description

Southwest Archaeology Institute is seeking a Field Archaeologist to join our dynamic team in Santa Fe, NM. This permanent full-time role focuses on high-quality field survey, excavation, and interpretation of archaeological data to support cultural resource management for public and private clients.

As a Field Archaeologist, you will conduct shovel test pits, unit excavations, site mapping, artifact processing, and collaborate with lab staff on analysis. You will document findings with field notes, photographs, and GIS data, ensuring compliance with professional standards and tribal consultation protocols. The role includes mentoring field technicians, coordinating with stakeholders, and contributing to research publications and public outreach.

Responsibility

  • Plan and conduct field surveys, stratigraphic excavations, and site documentation following established methodologies.
  • Record, map, photograph, and sketch archaeological contexts; maintain precise field notebooks and digital datasets.
  • Process finds in the laboratory, including cleaning, cataloging, conservation assessment, and data entry into collection management systems.
  • Analyze field data to interpret cultural chronology and site significance; prepare interim and final reports.
  • Coordinate logistics for field operations, safety protocols, and equipment maintenance; manage field crew on site.
  • Collaborate with diverse teams, Indigenous communities, and stakeholders to ensure respectful, compliant projects.
  • Support grant writing, client communications, and dissemination of results through reports, presentations, and public outreach.

Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field; master's degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of field experience in terrestrial or heritage contexts; thorough knowledge of excavation methods and artifact handling.
  • Experience with GIS, mapping software, and database management (e.g., ArcGIS, Terramodel, Access); ability to organize large datasets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare clear field notes and reports; experience with public outreach.
  • Physical fitness to work in field environments, hike cross-country, and lift equipment; valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of cultural resource management guidelines, NAGPRA compliance (if applicable), and safety procedures.
  • Team-oriented, adaptable, with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
