Job description

We are seeking a disciplined and motivated Field Archaeologist to join the Aegean Heritage Research Group for a multi year excavation and survey project in and around Athens, Greece. This role offers hands on field experience, collaborative lab work, and opportunities to contribute to peer reviewed publications and heritage management initiatives.

As a member of the field team, you will work closely with senior archaeologists, conservators, and GIS specialists to document sites, analyze finds, and help interpret the past for academic and public audiences.

Responsibility

  • Plan and participate in archaeological field surveys and excavations following established protocols.
  • Record stratigraphy, contexts, feature drawings, and context sheets with precision and consistency.
  • Process, catalog, and package artifacts for laboratory analysis and storage.
  • Operate GIS tools, total stations, drones, and photogrammetry to map sites and features.
  • Coordinate with laboratories for dating, conservation, and material analysis; manage chain of custody for finds.
  • Assist in preparing site reports, technical briefs, and contributions to publications.
  • Ensure health, safety, and ethical guidelines on-site and in the lab; maintain accurate daily logs.
  • Mentor field assistants and interns, and contribute to project planning and outreach activities.

Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field; field experience required.
  • Proven fieldwork experience in excavations or surveys; experience in Greece or the Mediterranean is a plus.
  • Solid knowledge of stratigraphy, recording methods, and artifact handling.
  • Proficiency with GIS (QGIS or ArcGIS), digital data entry, and database management.
  • Experience with lab workflows, conservation basics, and dating methods.
  • Strong written and spoken English; knowledge of Greek is advantageous.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather, lift equipment up to 25 kg, and adhere to safety standards.
  • Team oriented with strong organizational and communication skills.
