HeritageQuest Archaeology is recruiting a Field Archaeologist to join our Cambridge team. This role offers diverse fieldwork, hands-on data collection, and opportunities to contribute to impactful heritage reporting across urban and rural sites.
You will work under the supervision of senior archaeologists and collaborate with specialists to deliver high-quality archaeological outcomes for developers, authorities, and communities. Responsibility
- Plan, organize, and conduct field surveys and controlled excavations under standard protocols.
- Record stratigraphy, features, and artifacts using targeted forms and GIS tools.
- Prepare daily site reports, context sheets, and section drawings for data management systems.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and site access rules.
- Collaborate with specialists (ceramics, lithics, zooarchaeology) for artifact analysis and interpretation.
- Engage with developers, stakeholders, and local communities to communicate findings clearly.
- Assist with post-excavation processing, curation, and conservation planning.
- Mentor field technicians and contribute to training of junior staff and volunteers.
Qualification
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Archaeology or related field; equivalent field experience is considered.
- At least 2 years of field archaeology experience with proven stratigraphic recording and artifact handling.
- Experience with planimetry, context recording, and using field data forms; familiarity with GIS or AutoCAD preferred.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills; ability to work in challenging conditions.
- Valid UK driving license and willingness to travel to project sites; ability to work outdoors in varying weather.
- CSCS card or equivalent health and safety certification; First Aid at Work preferred.
- Computer literacy including MS Office; knowledge of data management software and report writing.
- Eligible to work in the UK and able to pass security and compliance checks.
