Join HeritageQuest Archaeology, a premier firm specializing in cultural heritage management and archaeological excavations. We are seeking a motivated Field Archaeologist to contribute to multi-site projects across the Charleston area. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to advance artifact recovery, documentation, and public heritage outreach.
As a Field Archaeologist, you will participate in excavation planning, coordinate fieldwork, supervise assistants, and ensure compliance with safety and ethical standards. This role offers the chance to refine field techniques, develop research skills, and author detailed site reports for publication and heritage education.
Responsibility
- Lead daily field operations and excavations at assigned sites, ensuring safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
- Record stratigraphy, features, and artifact recoveries using standardized documentation methods.
- Supervise field crews, interns, and volunteers; provide training on excavation techniques and safety protocols.
- Coordinate logistics with project managers, curators, and subcontractors; manage schedules and field equipment.
- Process and catalog recovered artifacts; prepare preliminary conservation and condition reports.
- Maintain accurate data in GIS and project databases; ensure data integrity for final reports.
- Prepare clear, concise site reports and contribute to final publications and heritage outreach materials.
Qualification
- Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field; fieldwork experience required (2+ years preferred).
- Strong knowledge of excavation methods, stratigraphy, artifact processing, and site recording standards.
- Proficiency with GPS/GIS, total stations, and data management software (MS Office; Access/Excel).
- Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to prepare professional reports and collaborate with diverse teams.
- Physical ability for fieldwork, endurance for long days outdoors, and willingness to travel or work weekends as needed.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate field equipment; willingness to follow safety and ethical guidelines.
- Relevant certifications (first aid, site safety) are a plus.
