Join Atlantic Heritage CRM as a Field Archaeologist in Charleston, South Carolina. You will lead field surveys and excavations, document contexts, and help interpret artifacts in support of cultural resource management projects. As part of our multidisciplinary team, you will plan and execute field methods, ensure safety, and document findings for final reporting and permitting.
Responsibility
- Conduct and supervise field surveys, excavations, test pits, and site recording in adherence to CRM standards and SHPO guidelines.
- Document stratigraphy, contexts, artifact finds, and feature observations using standard forms and digital data collection tools.
- Manage field logistics, equipment, crews, health and safety planning, and daily progress reporting.
- Ensure accurate data entry, backup, and GIS integration for site mapping and project deliverables.
- Prepare field notebooks, daily logs, site sketches, and photographic documentation.
- Collaborate with CRM team, consultants, and clients to adjust work plans and comply with permits.
- Mentor interns and technicians, providing training in archaeologic methods and safety.
Qualification
- Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field; field school participation counts.
- 2+ years of CRM or professional field experience; demonstrated safety and reliability.
- Proficiency in excavation methods, recording standards, and context documentation.
- Experience with GIS (ArcGIS) or digital data collection tools (Collector, Survey123); mapping and data management.
- Ability to perform physically demanding fieldwork; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; valid driver's license; willingness to travel.
- Strong written and verbal communication; ability to work with interdisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of SHPO permit processes and artifact curation; familiarity with laboratory processing is a plus.
