Join our team as a Field Archaeologist in Athens, Greece, where history comes alive through hands-on excavation, survey, and research. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to uncover, document, and interpret material culture from prehistoric to historic periods. As part of Heritage Horizons Archaeology, you will have opportunities to contribute to major site projects, publish findings, and mentor junior staff and interns.
Responsibility
- Lead and assist excavation operations at assigned archaeological sites, ensuring protocol and safety.
- Document field findings using systematic record-keeping, photography, and site mapping.
- Assist with surveying, mapping, stratigraphic recording, and context documentation.
- Coordinate with laboratory staff for artifact conservation, analysis, and curation.
- Ensure compliance with local heritage regulations, permits, and ethical standards.
- Prepare daily field notes, preliminary site reports, and contribute to final excavation reports.
- Mentor interns and volunteers in field methods, safety, and data collection.
- Collaborate with Project Directors to interpret findings and support publication efforts.
Qualification
- Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field; field training required.
- Minimum 2 years of hands-on field archaeology experience, including excavation and survey.
- Experience with stratigraphic recording, context sheets, artifact handling, and basic GIS knowledge (ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Strong physical stamina and ability to work in variable outdoor conditions and adverse weather.
- Proficiency in data entry, artifact photography, site mapping, and report writing; attention to detail.
- Knowledge of Greek cultural heritage regulations and permit processes; ability to operate within compliance frameworks.
- Fluent in English; knowledge of Greek is a plus; willingness to learn local language basics.
- Team player with good communication, problem-solving orientation, and safety mindset.
