Job description

At the Beacon Hill History Center, we illuminate the past to inspire the present. We are seeking a curious and disciplined Historian to lead rigorous historical research, help translate findings into engaging exhibits, and expand our public programs.

As a core member of our research team, you will collaborate with curators, educators, and digital specialists to produce accessible, accurate narratives for diverse audiences.

The ideal candidate combines strong archival research skills with excellent written and verbal communication, and a demonstrated ability to present complex history in an engaging way.

Responsibility

  • Lead primary-source research and historiographical analysis to inform exhibits and online content.
  • Develop interpretive narratives and exhibit labels that are accurate, accessible, and engaging for broad audiences.
  • Collaborate with curators, educators, and digital teams to design and implement public programs, tours, and lectures.
  • Manage archival collections and digital repositories, ensuring metadata quality and long-term preservation.
  • Contribute to grant writing, reporting, and fundraising efforts with clear, compelling historical narratives.
  • Deliver public lectures, school programs, and community outreach events to enliven local history.
  • Assess and implement audience feedback to continuously improve interpretation and programming.

Qualification

  • Master's degree in History, Public History, or a closely related field; PhD preferred for research-intensive roles.
  • 3-5 years of professional history experience, preferably in museums, archives, or higher education.
  • Proven research skills with familiarity in archival methods, primary-source analysis, and historiography.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, capable of producing scholarly and public-facing content.
  • Experience curating exhibits, designing interpretive materials, and coordinating educational programs.
  • Strong project management, collaboration, and grant-writing abilities.
  • Proficiency with digital tools for history projects (content management systems, image databases, basic GIS/mapping a plus).
