Verdant Horizons Nurseries is a leading provider of sustainable horticulture solutions in the Pacific Northwest. We design, propagate, and cultivate a diverse range of ornamentals, herbs, and edible crops for commercial and community projects. We are seeking a motivated Horticulture Technician to join our urban greenhouse team in Portland, OR. This role blends hands-on propagation, environmental control, and data-driven cultivation to deliver premium quality plants and high crop yields.
\nAs a member of our horticulture team, you will collaborate with agronomists, landscape designers, and operations to support year-round production. We value initiative, precision, and a passion for sustainable practices that protect biodiversity and conserve resources.
Responsibility
- Assist with propagation, seedling hardening, and transplanting in a climate-controlled greenhouse.
- Monitor environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light, CO2) and adjust systems to optimize growth.
- Implement integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to maintain healthy crops with minimal chemical inputs.
- Support irrigation scheduling and water-use efficiency initiatives across all blocks.
- Assist with crop scheduling, pruning, trellising, and quality checks to ensure uniform growth and high-quality product.
- Assist with data collection on plant performance, maintain accurate records, and contribute to crop forecasting and reporting.
- Support sanitation, equipment maintenance, and safety protocols to ensure a compliant, productive environment.
- Collaborate with designers and clients on plant selection and delivery timelines for landscape projects.
Qualification
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in greenhouse propagation, nursery operations, or urban farming.
- Knowledge of plant physiology, soil science, and nutrient management.
- Experience with climate control systems, irrigation equipment, and IPM practices.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced setting.
- Physical stamina for lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods; ability to work outdoors in variable weather.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills; ability to maintain accurate cultivation records.
- Any relevant certifications (IPM, pesticide applicator, or sustainable agriculture) are a plus.
