Job description

We’re seeking a seasoned Lead Gameplay Programmer to guide the technical vision of an internal Unity project while staying hands-on with development. As a key member of the engineering leadership, you will shape gameplay architecture, author robust systems, and mentor a growing team of engineers and designers. You’ll collaborate closely with product, design, art, and QA to deliver captivating, responsive, and performant gameplay experiences for players on multiple platforms. This is a hands-on leadership role that rewards initiative, deep technical skill, and strong collaboration.

In this role you will establish coding standards, review code, and ensure maintainable, scalable solutions that ship on time. You’ll optimize performance, profile bottlenecks, and implement memory management best practices to keep framerates smooth across devices. You will also own the build and tooling workflow, enabling faster iteration through robust CI/CD pipelines and tooling that accelerates development. You will lead by example, blending strategic planning with practical execution to deliver high-quality gameplay systems from concept to shipping product.

As the lead on the Unity project, you will mentor junior engineers, drive best practices, and foster a culture of continuous learning. You will work with cross-functional teams to translate creative ideas into technical specifications, while advocating for maintainable code, testability, and scalable architecture. If you’re passionate about creating memorable gameplay experiences and enjoy shaping the direction of a project from the ground up, we want to hear from you.

Responsibility

  • Set the technical direction for Unity-based gameplay features and systems, including core mechanics, progression, and player experience.
  • Lead design and implementation of gameplay systems such as movement, combat, AI, physics integration, and animation pipelines with robust architecture.
  • Mentor and grow the engineering team; review code, enforce coding standards, and promote best practices across the project.
  • Collaborate with designers, artists, audio, and QA to translate creative vision into high-quality, performant gameplay.
  • Optimize performance through profiling, bottleneck analysis, memory management, and platform-specific optimizations.
  • Drive development processes: plan sprints, estimate tasks, manage risks, and ensure timely delivery of milestones.
  • Build and maintain internal tooling and CI/CD pipelines to accelerate iteration and ensure reliable builds.

Qualification

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • 5+ years of professional game development experience with Unity; strong C# expertise and deep Unity engine knowledge.
  • Proven leadership experience, including guiding a small team or project through multiple development cycles.
  • Strong understanding of gameplay programming concepts: animation, physics, AI, navigation, networking, and multiplayer considerations.
  • Experience with performance profiling, optimization, memory management, and cross-platform deployment.
  • Proficiency with Git and collaborative workflows; familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Excellent communication, mentorship, and problem-solving skills; ability to articulate complex technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with ECS/DOTS and shader programming is a plus.
