Job description
BlueHorizon Oceanographic Institute invites applications for a Senior Oceanographer to lead coastal oceanography research and data analytics initiatives. This role blends field campaigns, data science, and collaborative leadership to advance understanding of shelf and nearshore processes that influence climate, ecosystems, and coastal resilience.
We seek a motivated scientist who can translate complex physical processes into actionable insights for policymakers, industry partners, and the public. The ideal candidate will drive high-impact publications, contribute to grant proposals, and mentor the next generation of ocean scientists.
Responsibility
- Lead the design and execution of coastal oceanography field campaigns, including planning, logistics, and safety oversight.
- Develop and apply numerical models and data analytics pipelines to characterize shelf dynamics, tides, and upwelling.
- Analyze multi-sensor oceanographic datasets (CTD, ADCP, ARGO) and synthesize results into actionable findings.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams (bio, climate, geospatial) to publish results and present to stakeholders.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, proposals, and annual reporting; supervise and mentor junior researchers.
- Maintain instrument integrity and ensure rigorous QA/QC across data collection and processing.
- Contribute to open data initiatives, data repositories, and educational outreach to the broader community.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, or a closely related field; or MSc with 5+ years of relevant experience.
- 3+ years of hands-on coastal oceanography field campaigns and data analysis experience.
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, and R; experience with NetCDF/CF conventions; GIS capabilities.
- Strong background in coastal dynamics, currents, tides, upwelling, and data assimilation.
- Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications and grant writing; ability to lead and collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams.
- Experience with autonomous platforms (gliders, AUVs) and oceanographic sensing equipment.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and mentoring skills; willingness to travel for fieldwork.
