Job description
Join a leading oceanographic research team at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, dedicated to understanding the dynamics of coastal and open-ocean systems. This full-time role blends field operations, data analysis, and collaborative science to advance marine knowledge and inform policy and stewardship.
As an Oceanographer, you will design and execute research campaigns, oversee data collection, and contribute to high-impact publications and grant-funded projects. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to translate observations into actionable insights about ocean circulation, climate variability, ecosystems, and ocean health.
Responsibility
- Plan, coordinate, and lead field campaigns and instrument deployments (CTD rosettes, ADCPs, buoys) with strict safety and quality-control standards.
- Collect, quality-control, and analyze oceanographic time-series and real-time data; develop and maintain robust data pipelines.
- Develop and run physical and biogeochemical models, perform statistical analyses, and interpret results in the context of climate and ecosystem dynamics.
- Collaborate with researchers across disciplines (biology, geophysics, climate science) to advance integrated studies and grant proposals.
- Prepare and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals; present results at national and international conferences.
- Supervise and mentor graduate students, technicians, and field crews; provide training on instrumentation and data handling.
- Responsible for field logistics, equipment maintenance, calibration, and safety compliance during expeditions and at-sea operations.
- Contribute to data management plans, metadata documentation, and open-data sharing as appropriate.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, Marine Science, or a closely related field; or Master’s degree with substantial oceanography field experience.
- 3+ years of hands-on field data collection and analysis; experience at sea highly preferred.
- Proficiency with oceanographic instrumentation (CTD, ADCP, rosette, fluorometers) and data management pipelines.
- Strong programming skills in Python and MATLAB; experience with R is a plus.
- Experience with GIS, remote sensing, and working with large time-series datasets.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to convey complex science to diverse audiences.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team; willingness to travel and work irregular hours, including field campaigns.
- Track record of scientific publications and experience with grant writing or project management is desirable.
