Join the Monterey Bay Oceanographic Institute, a premier research consortium focused on advancing understanding of coastal and open-ocean processes. We seek a Senior Oceanographer to lead experimental campaigns, drive novel analyses, and mentor early-career scientists.
As a key member of our interdisciplinary team, you will design field programs, develop and apply advanced data analytics, and contribute to peer-reviewed publications and stakeholder reports.
Responsibility
- Plan and oversee oceanographic data collection campaigns (in situ sensors, moorings, CTD, ADCP) ensuring data quality and safety.
- Lead data processing, QA/QC, and analysis using Python, MATLAB, and R; develop reproducible workflows.
- Build and apply physical and biogeochemical ocean models; interpret results for scientific and operational purposes.
- Collaborate with universities, national labs, and government agencies on research initiatives and field campaigns.
- Prepare technical reports, present findings to stakeholders, and contribute to grant proposals and publications.
- Mentor graduate students, postdocs, and junior staff; promote training in advanced oceanographic techniques.
- Maintain equipment and field safety protocols; manage budgets and project timelines.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, Marine Sciences, or a related field; or a Masterβs with significant independent research in oceanography.
- At least 5 years of hands-on field and data analysis experience in coastal and pelagic systems.
- Proficiency with Python (xarray, pandas), MATLAB, R; experience with data assimilation and modeling tools (ROMS/SELFE, MITgcm) is a plus.
- Extensive experience with oceanographic instrumentation (CTD, ADCP, multi-beam, moorings) and data management.
- Strong written and oral communication skills; track record of peer-reviewed publications.
- Demonstrated project management, collaboration, and mentorship abilities.
- Willingness to travel for field campaigns and collaborate with partner institutions.
