Job description
Join our leading oceanography team at a premier research institution in Monterey, California. This role blends fieldwork, data analysis, and cross-disciplinary collaboration to advance understanding of coastal and open-ocean processes. You will contribute to ongoing projects, mentor early-career staff, and translate findings into actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders.
We offer a dynamic, collaborative environment, competitive compensation, benefits, relocation assistance, and generous professional development opportunities.
Responsibility
- Plan and execute field campaigns, including deployment of autonomous instruments and vessel operations, while ensuring safety and quality data collection.
- Analyze oceanographic datasets (physical, chemical, and biological) and generate robust interpretations using scripting and statistical methods.
- Develop and run numerical models to simulate coastal and open-ocean processes and assess scenario outcomes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (biology, geology, climate science) to integrate datasets and publish findings.
- Prepare technical reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and policy briefs for diverse audiences.
- Mentor graduate students and junior staff, providing training on instrumentation, data processing, and best practices.
- Present results at conferences and stakeholder meetings, translating complex science into actionable insights.
Qualification
- Master's degree in oceanography, physical oceanography, marine science, or a closely related field; PhD preferred for senior roles.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in oceanographic data collection, processing, and analysis.
- Proficiency in Python and MATLAB for data analysis, with experience in R or Julia a plus.
- Experience with GIS and remote sensing data, and familiarity with ocean models (ROMS, MITgcm, HYCOM) is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of coastal ocean processes, circulation, stratification, and hydrographic measurements.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a track record of publications and policy-relevant reports.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, coordinate field operations, and maintain rigorous quality control.
- Eligibility to work in the United States and willingness to relocate to Monterey, CA; travel for field campaigns as required.
