Job description

We are a premium product packaging firm based in Chicago, delivering innovative packaging solutions for leading consumer brands. We are seeking a hands-on Product Packaging Engineer to join our dynamic team. You will own packaging concepts from ideation through launch, balancing performance, cost, sustainability, and manufacturability.

In this role, you will collaborate with R&D, marketing, supply chain, and suppliers to design packaging that protects product integrity, enhances shelf impact, and reduces total cost of ownership.

Responsibility

  • Lead end-to-end packaging development from concept through production readiness for multiple SKUs.
  • Collaborate with R&D, procurement, and suppliers to define specs, BOMs, and testing plans.
  • Evaluate materials (plastics, paper, films) for performance, barrier properties, and sustainability; drive material substitutions as needed.
  • Develop and maintain CAD drawings, 3D models, and packaging standards to ensure consistency.
  • Execute and interpret ISTA/ISTA-like packaging tests; implement design changes based on results.
  • Optimize packaging design for cost, weight, and recyclability; lead value engineering initiatives.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance, labeling accuracy, and package safety for global markets.
  • Manage project timelines, risk, and cross-functional communication to meet launch deadlines.

Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3-5+ years in consumer packaging development or related field.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and packaging design software; experience with 3D printing for prototyping.
  • Strong knowledge of packaging materials (plastics, paperboard, films), barrier testing, and packaging performance metrics.
  • Experience with sustainable packaging and recyclability initiatives; familiarity with circular economy principles.
  • Excellent project management, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Strong communication and vendor/supplier management abilities; comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
