Join our multidisciplinary team at Southwest Heritage Institute to advance cultural heritage preservation through fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and community collaboration. This position offers immersive field exposure, mentorship from senior archaeologists, and opportunities to publish and present findings.
We value rigorous data collection, adaptive field methods, and responsible stewardship of archaeological resources. Eligible candidates will participate in surveys, excavations, artifact processing, and site reporting, while adhering to permits and safety standards.
Responsibility
- Plan and conduct field surveys and excavations in accordance with dig plans, sampling strategies, and permit requirements.
- Document field activities with precise notes, photography, site forms, and GIS data; manage artifact recovery and curation processes.
- Coordinate with tribal authorities, stakeholders, and museum partners; maintain respectful engagement and compliance with cultural heritage laws.
- Assist in laboratory processing, cleaning, cataloging, and analysis of recovered artifacts; support dating and typology efforts.
- Prepare preliminary site reports, daily field logs, and post-excavation data entry; contribute to final reports and publications.
- Ensure health and safety protocols are followed; operate field equipment and site safety measures.
- Assist in grant reports and grant administration as needed; participate in outreach and public presentations.
- Collaborate with team members to develop training materials and mentor junior staff or interns.
Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field; master’s preferred.
- 2+ years of field experience in archaeological surveys or excavations; CRM experience a plus.
- Strong documentation, map-reading, and GIS or digital data skills.
- Ability to perform physically demanding fieldwork in variable weather conditions and travel to remote sites.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; experience with report writing and artifact interpretation.
- Valid driver's license; willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends as required.
- Knowledge of cultural heritage laws and ethical guidelines; familiarity with curation standards.
- Proficiency with photography, field software, and basic lab procedures is desirable.
