Heritage Nexus Archaeology is seeking a Senior Archaeologist to lead field and laboratory work on a prominent project in Rome, Italy. This role blends field excavations, artifact cataloging, GIS mapping, and comprehensive reporting. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, manage field crews, ensure compliance with cultural heritage laws, and mentor junior staff.

Responsibility
- Lead archaeological field surveys, excavations, stratigraphic recording, and site mapping in collaboration with the Project Manager and client representatives.
- Supervise and train field technicians, survey crews, and volunteers; ensure health, safety, QA, and ethical practices on site.
- Oversee artifact curation, cataloging, sampling, conservation planning, and laboratory processing of finds.
- Prepare progress reports, site records, and final deliverables; contribute to publication, grant write-ups, and outreach materials.
- Ensure compliance with Italian cultural heritage regulations (Codice dei Beni Culturali) and permit processes; coordinate with local authorities.
- Perform GIS analysis, 3D modeling, and spatial data management using ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and related software.
- Maintain effective communication with stakeholders, contractors, and community groups; deliver engaging presentations and site tours.
- Mentor junior archaeologists and support proposal development and field plan design.
Qualification
- Master's degree in Archaeology, Classical Archaeology, or a closely related field; PhD preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of field archaeology experience with demonstrated leadership on excavations or surveys.
- Proven track record in artifact cataloging, conservation, and laboratory processing.
- Strong experience with GIS (ArcGIS) and data management; familiarity with 3D modeling software is a plus.
- Knowledge of Italian cultural heritage law (Codice dei Beni Culturali) and permit acquisition processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English; proficiency in Italian is highly desirable.
- Ability to manage budgets, timelines, and multi-disciplinary teams; strong organizational skills.
- Availability to travel and work in the field for extended field seasons; physically capable and safety-conscious.
