Job description
Join Celestial Horizons Institute as a Senior Astronomy Data Scientist and help accelerate discoveries by turning complex observational data into actionable insights. This full-time role blends astronomy research, software engineering, and data science to enable world-class analyses from telescope data and simulations.
As part of our research team, you will collaborate with astronomers, engineers, and students to design scalable data pipelines, develop models for signal extraction, and contribute to publications and open science efforts.
We offer a collaborative environment, access to state of the art facilities, and opportunities to lead impactful projects that advance our understanding of the universe.
Responsibility
- Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines for large astronomical datasets including images, spectra, and time-series.
- Implement algorithms for calibration, noise reduction, source detection, and feature extraction.
- Build and maintain software tools for data visualization, exploratory analysis, and reproducible research workflows.
- Collaborate with astronomers to design experiments, plan observations, and interpret results.
- Optimize code for HPC and cloud environments, ensuring performance, scalability, and reproducibility.
- Document workflows, contribute to open-source projects, and mentor junior team members.
- Prepare and contribute to scientific publications, presentations, and grant reports.
Qualification
- PhD or MSc in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Computational Physics, or a closely related field; or equivalent research experience.
- Strong programming experience in Python and data science libraries (NumPy, SciPy, Astropy) and software engineering practices.
- Experience with large datasets, astronomical file formats (FITS, HDF5), and data-intensive pipelines.
- Proficiency in HPC and parallel computing (MPI, Dask, or similar) and cloud-based workflows.
- Familiarity with version control (Git), testing, and CI/CD for robust, reproducible research software.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Track record of scientific publications or conference presentations is a plus.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work in a dynamic research environment.
