Job description
BlueCurrent Fisheries is seeking a dedicated Senior Fisheries Biologist to join our science team in Anchorage, Alaska. This role focuses on sustainable stock assessment, field data collection, and collaboration with managers, researchers, and coastal communities.
As part of our innovative team, you will apply advanced methods to monitor fish populations, analyze catch and survey data, and contribute to policy-ready reports that guide sustainable harvests.
Responsibility
- Design and lead field data collection and monitoring programs for key Alaskan stock assessments in coastal and inshore waters.
- Analyze biological and catch data using R, Python, and related tools; develop statistical models and sensitivity analyses.
- Collaborate with state and federal agencies, universities, and tribal partners to inform management decisions and best practices.
- Lead GIS-driven habitat and distribution mapping, and visualize stock trends for stakeholders.
- Mentor technicians and graduate students; supervise field crews during sampling campaigns.
- Prepare technical memos, scientific reports, and policy briefs; present findings to diverse audiences.
- Represent the organization at meetings, conferences, and community outreach events to promote sustainable fisheries.
Qualification
- Masterβs degree in Fisheries Biology, Ecology, or a closely related field; PhD preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in fisheries stock assessment, population dynamics, or related research.
- Strong proficiency in R and Python for data analysis; experience with SQL is a plus.
- Experience with GIS (ArcGIS or QGIS) and marine spatial data visualization.
- Solid understanding of U.S. federal and state fisheries regulations and policy processes.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrated ability to prepare compelling technical reports and present to diverse audiences.
- Ability to work in field conditions, travel for field campaigns, and work across multiple projects with limited supervision.
