Job description
BlueCurrent Fisheries is seeking a Senior Fisheries Scientist to lead applied research and resource management projects across local and regional fisheries in the Pacific Northwest. This is a hybrid role blending field work, data analysis, and stakeholder collaboration to inform sustainable harvest and ecosystem-based management.
You'll develop study designs, supervise field teams, analyze catch and stock assessment data, and communicate findings to policymakers, industry partners, and communities.
Responsibility
- Lead design and execution of fisheries stock assessment projects across commercial and recreational sectors
- Manage field sampling, data collection protocols, and quality control across multiple sites
- Apply statistical models (stock assessment, population dynamics) using R and Python
- Coordinate with state and federal agencies, tribal partners, and industry stakeholders
- Prepare technical reports, briefs, and policy recommendations for resource managers
- Oversee data management, GIS mapping of stock distributions, and visualization outputs
- Mentor junior scientists and technicians; ensure safety and compliance on field operations
- Support grant writing and progress reporting for funded projects
Qualification
- Master's degree in Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Ecology or related field; PhD preferred
- 5+ years of applied fisheries research or stock assessment experience
- Strong proficiency in R and Python for statistical analysis; experience with GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS)
- Experience with data visualization and communicating complex results to nontechnical audiences
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects, budgets, and cross-disciplinary teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to travel and conduct field work in coastal environments
- Knowledge of local Pacific Northwest fisheries management frameworks is a plus
