We are seeking a Senior Insurance Underwriter to own complex risk analysis, pricing decisions, and portfolio management in a fast-paced, growth-focused environment. This role supports hybrid/remote work with in-person collaboration in New York when required.
As a Senior Underwriter, you will evaluate risks across commercial lines, determine terms and limits, and guide junior team members through the underwriting lifecycle. You will partner with brokers, actuaries, and claims professionals to optimize profitability while delivering superior client outcomes.
What you’ll do:
Responsibility
- Lead risk assessment and pricing decisions for new and renewal commercial lines, ensuring profitability and compliance.
- Review coverage terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions; negotiate terms with brokers as needed.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including actuarial, claims, and product management to refine rating plans.
- Mentor and develop junior underwriters; provide guidance and training to ensure consistent standards.
- Monitor portfolio performance, identify trends, and implement risk selection strategies to optimize loss ratios.
- Maintain high-quality documentation, underwriting files, and audit trails for regulatory compliance.
- Foster strong broker relationships and deliver timely, clear communication on decisions and rationale.
- Drive process improvements by leveraging data analytics and underwriting software tools.
Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Risk Management, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of commercial property & casualty underwriting experience.
- Deep knowledge of underwriting guidelines, rating plans, and pricing methodologies.
- Proficiency in underwriting systems, data analysis tools, and advanced Excel; SQL or data visualization skills a plus.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management abilities.
- Proven track record of profitable portfolio management and risk selection.
- Relevant licenses or certifications (e.g., CPCU) preferred; actively pursuing is acceptable.
