Job description
Join Pacific Wave Institute as a Senior Oceanographer to lead innovative physical oceanography research and field campaigns. You will work with a cross-disciplinary team to address real-world ocean challenges, from offshore current dynamics to coastal heat content and climate-related variability. The role combines field operations, data science, and model development in a collaborative, policy-relevant environment. We offer a dynamic, inclusive environment with access to state-of-the-art instrumentation, open data platforms, and opportunities to publish in top-tier journals.
Responsibility
- Lead design and execution of ocean data collection campaigns, including deployment of CTD, ADCP, and autonomous platforms.
- Develop and apply physical oceanography models and data assimilation methods to interpret observations.
- Analyze large multidisciplinary datasets, produce actionable insights, and deliver clear scientific reports for stakeholders.
- Collaborate with engineers, biologists, and policymakers to translate findings into practical recommendations.
- Mentor graduate students and junior scientists; supervise field crews and quality control procedures.
- Publish peer-reviewed articles and present findings at scientific conferences.
- Contribute to grant writing, project planning, and budgeting.
- Represent the institute in outreach activities and international collaborations.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, or a closely related field; postdoctoral experience is a plus.
- At least 4 years of post-PhD research experience focused on physical oceanography.
- Strong proficiency in Python and MATLAB; experience with R and Jupyter notebooks is preferred.
- Experience with NetCDF data, CTD, ADCP, Argo floats, and ocean observing systems.
- Solid background in data analysis, statistics, and ocean modeling; track record of publications.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and written/oral presentation skills; capable of mentoring others.
- Experience with grant writing and project management is desirable.
- Eligibility to work in the United States and ability to travel for field campaigns as needed.
