Job description

BlueWave Oceanographic Institute is seeking a Senior Oceanographer to lead cutting-edge research in physical oceanography and ocean dynamics. This role focuses on advancing understanding of coastal and open-ocean processes, to improve climate forecasts, resource management, and hazard mitigation. You will collaborate with engineers, data scientists, and field teams to design experiments, run numerical models, and translate findings into actionable insights.

We offer a collaborative, innovation-driven environment, competitive compensation, relocation assistance, and opportunities for field campaigns in the Monterey Bay region.

Responsibility

  • Lead and manage research programs in physical oceanography, focusing on coastal currents, stratification, tides, and mixing processes.
  • Plan, execute, and oversee field campaigns (CTD/Moorings/ADORs) and data collection in coastal and open-ocean environments.
  • Develop, calibrate, and validate numerical models of ocean circulation and climate variability.
  • Analyze large, multi-source datasets; apply statistics, data assimilation, and machine-learning techniques as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to translate findings into predictive tools and decision-support products.
  • Mentor graduate students, postdocs, and junior staff; contribute to grant writing and project management.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences; represent the institute in collaborations with external partners.

Qualification

  • PhD in Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, or a closely related field; equivalent experience considered for exceptional candidates.
  • Minimum 5 years of independent research experience with a strong publication record.
  • Expertise in physical oceanography, ocean modeling (e.g., ROMS/ROMS-based models), and data analysis.
  • Proficiency in Python and MATLAB; experience with data visualization and scientific computing.
  • Experience with field instrumentation (CTD,ARGO, moored buoys) and ocean observing systems.
  • Strong communication skills, ability to collaborate interdisciplinary teams, and track record of successful grant support.
  • Willingness to travel for field campaigns and conferences; eligibility to work in the United States.
