The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) seeks a Senior Oceanographer to advance physical oceanography research, lead field campaigns, and contribute to interdisciplinary studies impacting climate, coastal resilience, and marine ecosystems.
In this role you will collaborate with researchers across disciplines, oversee field deployments, analyze multi-sensor datasets, and publish findings in top-tier journals. You will also mentor early-career scientists, contribute to grant proposals, and help translate scientific insights into policy-relevant outcomes.
Responsibility
- Lead design and execution of coastal and open-ocean measurement campaigns using CTD, ADCP, gliders, floats, and remote sensing systems.
- Develop and apply state-of-the-art data analytics pipelines to large oceanographic datasets in MATLAB, Python, and R.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to translate physical oceanographic data into actionable insights for climate, weather forecasting, and coastal resilience.
- Plan and supervise field deployments, ship-time campaigns, and instrument maintenance in compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Mentor graduate students, postdocs, and junior scientists; contribute to training and career development.
- Lead and contribute to grant proposals, manage project budgets, and disseminate results through publications and presentations.
- Communicate complex scientific concepts to stakeholders, policymakers, and the public through reports and outreach.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography or a closely related field; equivalent combined experience considered.
- Minimum 5 years of research experience in physical oceanography, ocean observations, or related areas.
- Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications and demonstrated project leadership.
- Proficiency with data analysis and visualization in MATLAB, Python (NumPy, SciPy), and R; experience with GIS is a plus.
- Experience with ocean instrumentation (CTD, ADCP, Argo floats, gliders) and data management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to lead teams and collaborate across disciplines.
- Willingness to travel for field campaigns and ship-based research; ability to work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.
- U.S. residency or work eligibility; compliance with all institutional safety and research regulations.
