Job description
OceanInsight Research Institute is seeking a Senior Oceanographer to lead high-impact marine research programs focused on coastal dynamics, climate-related processes, and data-driven decision support. This role blends field operations, advanced modeling, and cross-disciplinary collaboration to advance understanding of ocean systems and their influence on coastal communities.
As a senior member of our team, you will design and execute field campaigns, develop analytical workflows, mentor early-career scientists, and contribute to proposals and publications that shape policy and industry practices.
Responsibility
- Lead design and execution of oceanographic field campaigns using ships, autonomous vehicles, gliders, and moorings.
- Develop and apply numerical models of coastal and open-ocean processes (ROMs, HYCOM, MITgcm) to support research and forecasting.
- Analyze and visualize hydrographic data (CTD, ADCP, water samples) to generate actionable insights for stakeholders.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams on coastal resilience, climate adaptation, and ecosystem studies.
- Mentor graduate students and early-career scientists; oversee data workflows, QA/QC, and code development.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals; present results at conferences and seminars.
- Lead grant writing and funding proposals; manage project timelines and budgets.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography, Marine Science, or related field; or a MSc with extensive field and modeling experience.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on field research and data analysis in oceanography.
- Proficiency in Python and MATLAB; experience with R and SQL for data processing.
- Experience with ocean modeling (ROMS, HYCOM, MITgcm) and GIS tools for spatial analysis.
- Strong publication record and demonstrated grant-writing ability.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; proven ability to lead teams and manage projects.
- Ability to conduct field operations at sea, in compliance with safety and environmental regulations; willingness to travel.
