Job description
Join our interdisciplinary team at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as a Senior Oceanographer focused on physical oceanography and data analytics. You will lead advanced oceanographic field campaigns, develop and apply high‑impact numerical models, and work with cross‑disciplinary scientists to address climate, coastal, and ecosystem questions.
This role combines hands‑on field operations, data integration, and high‑level dissemination to stakeholders. We offer a collaborative environment, access to state‑of‑the‑art observatories, and competitive benefits.
About the role
Responsibility
- Lead design and execution of physical oceanography field campaigns and instrumentation deployments.
- Develop, calibrate, and apply numerical models and data assimilation techniques to forecast ocean state and climate trends.
- Perform data quality control, processing, and visualization of multi‑sensor observations (CTD, moorings, Argo, satellites).
- Collaborate with cross‑disciplinary teams (biogeochemistry, coastal engineering, climate) to translate findings into actionable insights.
- Mentor graduate students, postdocs, and junior scientists; publish results in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Communicate results to stakeholders, funding agencies, and policy makers; contribute to grant writing and proposal development.
- Lead project planning, budgeting, and field logistics; ensure safety, compliance, and ethical research practices.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, Marine Science, or a closely related field; or a Master’s degree with substantial applicable experience.
- 5+ years of experience in oceanographic data analysis, modeling, and field operations.
- Proficiency in Python and MATLAB for data analysis; experience with ROMS, HYCOM, MITgcm, or similar models, and data assimilation techniques.
- Strong publication record and demonstrated success in grant writing or securing research funding.
- Excellent problem solving, communication, collaboration, and leadership skills; ability to manage complex field campaigns and teams.
- Experience with moorings, CTD and Argo data, remote sensing, and instrument calibration.
- Ability to obtain and maintain necessary clearances and work authorization as per institutional policies.
