Job description
We are seeking a Senior Oceanography Research Scientist to lead innovative studies in marine systems across coastal and open-ocean environments. This position combines field campaigns, automated data collection, and advanced data analytics to deliver actionable insights for scientists, policymakers, and resource managers. As part of the Cascadia Marine Institute team, you will design experiments, supervise research staff, collaborate with universities and government agencies, and contribute to high-impact publications.

Responsibility
- Lead design and execution of oceanographic research projects focusing on coastal and open-ocean processes.
- Plan and coordinate field campaigns, ship-based sampling, autonomous instrument deployments, and mooring operations.
- Collect, quality-control, and analyze large multi-parameter datasets (CTD, ADCP, Argo, sensors).
- Develop and apply numerical models and statistical methods to interpret physical and biogeochemical processes.
- Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at conferences.
- Lead proposal development and assist in securing external funding and grants.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams including biology, geochemistry, and data science; mentor graduate students and technicians.
Qualification
- PhD in Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, or a closely related field; or MSc with substantial equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of relevant research experience in oceanography, with a proven track record of field campaigns and data analysis.
- Strong programming skills in Python and MATLAB; experience with data visualization and version control.
- Experience with ocean observing systems (CTD, ADCP, Argo, moorings) and data management.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to write grant proposals and publish scientific papers.
- Ability to work both independently and in collaborative, interdisciplinary teams; capacity to manage multiple priorities.
- Willingness to travel for fieldwork and engage with partner institutions.
