Join a premier astronomy research team in Flagstaff, Arizona. This full-time role blends scientific inquiry with modern data analytics to advance our understanding of the universe. You will work with rich telescope datasets, develop scalable data processing pipelines, and translate complex findings into actionable insights for researchers and the public.
As a key contributor, you will collaborate with astronomers, software engineers, and education staff to produce high-impact results and user-friendly tools that empower discovery and outreach.
Responsibility
- Design and implement data processing pipelines for optical and radio telescope data.
- Develop reproducible analysis workflows using Python, Astropy, NumPy, Pandas, and Jupyter notebooks.
- Build interactive visualizations and dashboards to communicate results to researchers, educators, and the public.
- Collaborate with astronomers to formulate research questions and test astrophysical hypotheses.
- Prepare results for presentation at conferences and in peer‑reviewed publications.
- Mentor interns and early-career researchers; contribute to training materials and tutorials.
- Contribute to grant proposals, project planning, and data management best practices.
- Maintain and document software, data pipelines, and version-controlled codebases.
Qualification
- Master’s or PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Data Science, or a related field.
- Strong programming skills in Python; experience with NumPy, SciPy, Astropy, Pandas; familiarity with Git and software engineering best practices.
- Experience with data visualization tools (Matplotlib, Plotly, Bokeh) and building interactive dashboards.
- Proficiency with SQL and relational databases; comfortable working in Linux and high-performance computing environments.
- Experience analyzing large observational datasets; familiarity with FITS, VO protocols, and telescope data formats is a plus.
- Ability to communicate complex results clearly to diverse audiences and collaborate across disciplines.
- Track record of publications, conference presentations, or contributions to open-source projects.
