Harborstone Publishing, a premium independent publisher based in New York City, is seeking a Senior Editor to lead manuscript development across fiction and non-fiction lists. This role offers the chance to shape groundbreaking titles, work with top authors, and drive cohesive editorial strategy across the list.
You will collaborate with authors, agents, editors, designers, and marketers to refine manuscripts, guide structure and pacing, and ensure titles meet our standards of excellence and market fit.

Responsibility
- Lead editorial development for assigned lists, guiding manuscript revision from concept to final draft
- Manage end-to-end editorial process, including acquisitions, manuscript evaluation, line edits, and copyediting
- Collaborate with authors, agents, and designers to shape book structure, pacing, and market fit
- Oversee fact-checking and metadata quality, ensuring accuracy and compliance with publishing standards
- Coordinate with production and marketing teams to plan launch campaigns and publishing calendars
- Mentor junior editors and interns, fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture
- Review contracts and negotiate terms in collaboration with the rights and legal teams
- Ensure accessibility, inclusivity, and diversity across lists and author partnerships
Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Publishing, Communications, or related field; Master’s preferred
- Minimum 5 years editorial experience in trade publishing, with a track record of successful acquisitions
- Strong editing, copyediting, and proofreading skills; excellent command of grammar and style
- Experience with editorial systems, project management, and metadata standards
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
- Knowledge of market trends, reader preferences, and competitive titles
- Proficiency with InDesign or similar design software is a plus
