BlueHarbor Fisheries is a forward-thinking seafood company committed to sustainable harvesting and responsible resource management. We are seeking a Senior Fisheries Biologist to lead scientific analysis and provide strategic guidance for stock assessments, fishery management, and regulatory compliance. This role is based in Portland, Maine, with occasional fieldwork and partner engagement.
Overview
This position blends research, data analytics, and cross-functional collaboration to support sustainable fisheries and informed decision-making across the organization.
Responsibility
- Lead stock assessment projects and population models to inform harvest limits and management strategies.
- Analyze fishery data from catch records, observers, and survey programs to guide policy and operations.
- Collaborate with managers, researchers, and industry partners to develop science-based management advice.
- Design and oversee field sampling protocols and monitoring programs to ensure data quality.
- Prepare technical reports, policy briefs, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure regulatory compliance and contribute to permitting and reporting processes.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to training programs within the team.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and cost-efficient data collection.
Qualification
- Master’s degree or PhD in Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field; or 5+ years of relevant experience.
- Strong knowledge of stock assessment methods, population dynamics, and data analysis (R, Python, SQL).
- Experience with GIS and spatial analysis; proficiency with ArcGIS or QGIS.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to present complex concepts to non-specialists.
- Experience with field sampling, data collection, and quality assurance.
- Familiarity with current fisheries regulations and policy development.
- Proven project management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Willingness to travel and work on-site in Portland, ME as required.
